Meet the sheep: Clean energy—and more—at Tyto Solar!

Madison Gas and Electric's (MGE) 6-megawatt Tyto Solar array in Fitchburg is the company’s first renewable energy project to use sheep to help control ground cover. A flock of sheep from nearby Wiscovery Farm arrived at the solar facility in July 2024. The grazing sheep help control ground cover during the growing season, maintaining grass and brush in a sustainable way.

Tyto Solar is one of a number of projects to help MGE achieve our industry-leading carbon reduction goals. By 2030, we expect to deliver to MGE customers electricity with 80% fewer carbon emissions, and by 2050, we expect to deliver net-zero carbon electricity. Learn more.

I'm so glad this is my energy provider! I visited the sheep in person last month, and it was a really fun experience.

Absolutely love this! Fewer things are more idyllic than sheep grazing on grassy hillsides, and the combination of sheep and solar farming in fields of native Wisconsin plants that support this soil, insects, and animal life provides hope for greater planetary health and wellbeing. Please continue and expand!

Looks like a great partnership! Much better than gas-powered mowers for sure.

Great mix of grasses under panels and native forbs around sides for pollinators. I agree that sheep are better around PV panels than goals.

I love the environmental benefits of both solar and using sheep instead of power mowers to keep the fields in shape. Great Video.

Sheep, native pollinator species, and solar power - what's not to love. This beneficial grouping is more than just the sum of its parts and such thoughtful combinations are how we successfully meet energy goals as well as agriculture, livestock, and soil improvements.

Love seeing these innovative ways to be more sustainable-sheep are such characters, and having the native plantings helps support the base of our food chai!

It's a win-win-win: a win for the farmer, a win for the customer, and a win for the environment!

Happy to see and hear the progress being made. The use of the sheep, and native plants shows the level of thought in developing these solar farms.
